Hello to all,
A few months ago there was a brief discussion on the list about the Philip
Morris "Finding your voice" cigarette campaign designed to target Women of
Colour in the US. There is an interesting article in the October 2000 issue
of Sojourner: The Women's Forum that discusses the tobacco industry
marketing toward American Women of Colour and also women in developing
countries.
An excerpt...
"The tobacco industry has gained a foothold in the male market - in the top
five cigarette markets world-wide in 1996, 61% of Chinese men, 27% of US
men, 59% of Japanese men, 67% of Russian men and 60% of Indonesian men
called themselves smokers. Women in these countries have a much lower level
of smoking - 7% in China, 23% in the US, 15% in Japan, 25-30% in Russia and
5% in Indonesia. In Vietnam, the country with the highest smoking
prevalence in the world, 74% of men smoke compared to 4% of women. These
low numbers among women, according to tobacco control activists, could mean
big dollars to US based transnational corporations."
Unfortunately the Sojourner magazine website has not been updated for a
while so there is no information on the article there, however there is
information on how you can order a subscription.
