1. 2004 SUMMERACTIVE HOT TOPICS

Hot Topic No. 1: “Focusing on Childhood Obesity”

SummerActive (www.summeractive.canoe.ca) is a national six-week campaign
(May 10–June 19, 2004) that promotes physical activity and helps develop
healthy lifestyles.
Schools Come Alive (www.schoolscomealive.org) and Ever Active Schools
(www.everactive.org) produced this Hot Topic, “Focusing on Childhood
Obesity,” to promote SummerActive’s healthy living message. The Alberta
Centre for Active Living will distribute Hot Topics every two weeks during
the campaign.

Watch for the next two Hot Topics:
May 25: Physical Activity Programming at Work (produced by the Be Fit for
Life Network and Provincial Fitness Unit)
June 7: Alberta Parks: Great Places to Get out and Play! (produced by
Alberta Community Development)

The SummerActive campaign in Alberta is sponsored by Alberta Community
Development and the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation
in partnership with Health Canada and other organizations.

The Alberta Centre for Active Living wrote this month's feature article on
the Canadian Health Network: “Community gardens: Growing More than
Vegetables.” You can check out this article on the CHN home
page(www.canadian-health-network.ca).

This resource summarizes the health benefits of gardening, provides tips on
how to start a community garden, and shows the integration of physical
activity with other health determinants, such as the physical environment
and social support.

Contact CHN: We welcome your feedback on the feature article. Please submit

c) Coalition for Active Living Walking Survey
The Coalition for Active Living, a national coalition of more than 45
health-promotion groups, has just released its “Walking Habits of Adult
Canadians Survey.” The survey revealed that only half of all adult Canadians
had walked more than a kilometre on the day before being surveyed. Worse
still, 26% of all adult Canadians had not walked to school or work or to do
errands even once during the previous week.
