There is social Science and SOCIAL SCIENCE.

If I had to take the ONE paper that I have found most useful.

Williams, G., and Popay, J. (1997) Social Science and the Future of
Population Health Research, in Katz, J. (eds) Promoting Health: Skills,
Perspectives and Practice. London: Macmillan/ Open University Press.

and these others are not bad either!

There is John Lynch's chapter in "Social Epidemiology" that demonstrates
the power of sociological concepts in income related research.

Sarah Nettleton's work and Sylvia Tesh's book "Hidden Arguments: Political
Ideology and Disease Prevention "

Anything by Carles Muntaner [International Journal of Health Services and
numerous book chapters] on class shows the usefulness of these ideas...for
understanding the source of health inequalities.

"The sociology of health promotion" Mel Bartley et al... eds. is another
example.

The Bristol Group as I call them: David Gordon, Mary Shaw, George Davey
Smith, Daniel Dorling are a constant source of thoughtful social
science-oriented work. See anything by Policy Press, Bristol.

For political economy, Vicente Navarro, Gary Teeple, David Coburn, Carles
Muntaner, Esping-Andersen, Alesino from Harvard ,all provide profound
insights into the determinants of health. New book from Baywood by
Muntaner and Navarro.

Wilkinson -- Unhealthy Societies- has much social science work in it.

THEN there is run of the mill social cience stuff that attempts to change
behaviour: Stages of change model, health belief, and a lot more
psychological stuff.

and finally...

Popay, J. and Williams G.H. (Eds.) (1994) Researching the People's Health,
Routledge which also is now a RARE gem. Try www.amazon.com alternative
sellers.
