it is not epidemiology that does it surely? international health development since the World Bank took the lead and dominant role has increasingly led to reductionism. health globally is predominantly viewed as an economic determinant, something that should be enhanced in populations to improve economic growth. This combined with a disease model is a narrow take on the broader notion of health as put forward by WHO in the 1978 Alma Ata Declaration. Neo-liberalism and the obsession of markets, privitization and public management only exagerates this posistion. For a really brilliant analysis of these impacts read either David Werner or Koivusalo and Ollila.
