[Calvert is an NDP - social democratic -- premier of Saskatchewan]

Calvert tells premiers to set some goals

OTTAWA - The premier of Saskatchewan is encouraging politicians to set
some goals for themselves when it comes to improving health care for
aboriginal people.

Lorne Calvert spoke in Ottawa Monday morning as part of a first ministers
conference on health care.

The meeting began with presentations from aboriginal leaders who said the
health systems serving their communities are in a "shameful condition"
compared to the services non-aboriginal Canadians enjoy.

Saskatchewan's premier said Canadians need to focus on lowering the infant
mortality rate for aboriginal people to the level of the rest of the
population.

Calvert said politicians also need to look beyond specific health programs.

"I believe that we do need to broaden our discussion and our thought about
aboriginal health to look at the determinants of health, whether it's
poverty, whether it's lifestyle, [or] whether it's self-determination,"
said Calvert.

"We need to focus on the determinants of health for all Canadians, but in
this case, particularly for aboriginal Canadians."

Calvert and the rest of the country's leaders will spend the next three
days discussing the future of health care in Canada.

The meeting is being carried live on television.
