----- Hi everyone,

I am also in support of Dennis being nominated. I believe he would be an
excellent knowledgeable advocate.

Alison,

I can't think of someone who's put the SDOH & Health Promo., in
general, more on the map than Dennis has (here and elsewhere) and I'd
like to nominate him or second a nomination.

Thanks,

open
call for nominations for 12 - 18 Commissioners on the social
determinants of
health, asking:
I wonder if the HP people would like to nominate the
indefatiguable
Dennis Raphael.

Any comments? Suggestions? Nominations?

WHO sponsored Commission on Social Determinants of Health:

Public invitation to nominate Commissioners

At this year's World Health Assembly, WHO Director-General Dr LEE
Jong-wook
announced the start of a process to act upon the social and
environmental
causes of health inequities. The launch of the Commission on Social
Determinants of Health will add to existing UN efforts to increase
vulnerable people's chances for a healthy life. Differently from
previous
WHO approaches to social determinants, the Commission's edge will be
in
strongly advocating for political action on the key social factors
that
influence health.

Vital to the Commission's success will be strong partnership with other
UN
agencies, as well as with national governments, bilateral agencies,
civil
society groups and the private sector. Much knowledge on social
determinants
and what works to address them already exists among the UN specialized
agencies, in countries, and in affected communities.

To accelerate progress, the Commission on Social Determinants of Health
will
produce scientifically informed policy recommendations and spearhead a
political process promoting their implementation. National policies,
global
public health agendas and WHO's own ways of working are expected to
evolve
as a consequence of the Commission's work.

WHO has issued an open global call for nominations for 12-18
Commissioners,
whose main task will be to provide political leadership and advocate
for
global change. Nominations will be accepted through 15 November 2004.
The
Commission will operate for three years from March 2005 and will hold
3-4
major events a year, mostly in developing countries. These will be
keyed to
specific themes (e.g., early child health, urbanization and health) or
the
health challenges faced by particular communities (e.g., Roma
populations,
slum dwellers). The Commission will be supported by a small
secretariat
based at WHO in Geneva and at University College, London. Besides
contribution from all WHO staff in all parts of the Organization, the
Commission will be supported by networks comprising some of the
world's
leading public health scientists.

The translated Call for Nominations can be accessed through the WHO
website
