I have been just catching up on last week's news, and saw that the
Canadian Health Network's new Health Promotion Affiliate has an excellent
article now on the CHN site, looking at how health promotion can help us
to broaden our thinking about cardiovascular disease.

The CHN Health Promotion Affiliate, a partnership of the Ontario
Prevention Clearinghouse and the Centre for Health Promotion has published
an article entitled "Healthy Hearts and Healthy Communities" on the
Canadian Health Network's website at
http://www.canadian-health-network.ca.

Posted as a notice to the social determinants of health list, it drew some
concern from SDOH moderator Dennis Raphael, that although the article
itself is very good, the INTERHEART report cited in it "assumes that 90%of
variance associated with heart disease is due to biomedical and lifestyle
factors.  This is only the case when you fail to include income and/or
education as relevant variables.  It has been known since the mid-1970s
... that biomedical and lifestyle factors account for at best 20-30% of
variance in incidence and mortality from CVD."
