The New Economics Foundation (nef) published a report (A well-being
manifesto for a flourishing society) which looks at what policy would look
like if well-being were its aim. It calls on government to help UK citizens
be happier and more fulfilled, not richer and more depressed.
A previous publication (The power and potential of well-being indicators:
Measuring young people's well-being in Nottingham) reported results of a
pilot study which showed that measuring well-being is a powerful way in
which local government can use its 'well-being powers' to join up different
local services and gain important insights into the ultimate impacts of
policy.
nef recommended that government puts together a larger pilot which uses
well-being measurement over five regions for several years and further
explores the implications of well-being for a range of policy agendas
including education and preventative health measures.
