To think that this approach to teaching is even considered is appalling.

We have advanced medical education significantly over the last decade
to incorporate humanism, cultural competency, ethics, communication,
patient-centered approaches to care. OSCE and TOSCE have been a main
part of the skill evaluation of students.

I was fortunate to be trained in a program where highly skilled
professional women use their body to properly educate medical students,
in a very professional manner, educating us on everything from the
proper questions, the sensitivity of the exam, the correct way to
performing the pelvic exam and viewing all the anatomical structures,
the proper use of equipment, and the impact of what we are doing.

The idea of considering women under anesthesia ( let along to think
about why they are under anesthesia to begin with) is crossing the line
to patient abuse.

Sandi - thank you for sending this article and making us aware of this
issue. I have passed it on to my contacts. I'm astounded that anyone
would even try to justify practicing procedures an anaesthetized person
without that person's explicit and prior consent.

I think anyone in the medical community who is performing these
non-consentual procedures could benefit from looking at some of the
literature and campaigns on drug-facilitated sexual assault. If a
person can't say no to something, then they can't say yes. Waiting
until they are unconscious is not a solution. (And it's not teaching
future doctors anything about how to properly do a pelvic exam on a
conscious woman who might have questions, concerns, discomfort, etc.)

Thank you again, Sara

Subject: [SDOH] Teaching Pelvic Examinations Under Anaesthesia: What do
Women Think + public (quick/non=scientific) poll

This particular issue is not a new issue but has been highlighted by
the recent study out of the University of Calgary. The Calgary study
interviewed 102 women and a very basic/non-scientific poll is included
on the blog and available for both consumer and healthcare professional
input, including commentary.
Please take this 1 minute poll and circulate. Unaddressed issues should
be obvious.
Thanks.
Sandi

2010 (abstract) Teaching Pelvic Examinations Under Anaesthesia: What Do
Women Think? U of Calgary
Note: This issue of pelvic exams while under anesthesia has been
explored in the research in the past (click on 'read more' to see
viewers comments)

Conclusion: "The majority of patients wish to help medical students to
learn but expect consent to be sought if medical students are to perform
pelvic examinations on anaesthetised patients. Before introducing
explicit consent in Canadian teaching centres, it will first be
necessary to determine the feasibility of seeking consent specifically
for this procedure."
