Health reporter Andre Picard is mistaken when he concludes in his otherwise
excellent analysis of the latest health scare: "Sadly, there are no vested
interests pushing for the benefits of healthy living" (Whoa- the latest
health horror needs some perspective, Jan. 13). Actually, there is a vast
public health and health research machinery dedicated to preserving jobs
and salaries, and research funding for those extolling and researching the
virtues of lifestyle effects upon health. There is also a well-established
wellness industry and emerging industrial food apparatus pushing the
lifedtyle mantra as they rake in billions of dollars from Canadians'
pockets. Governments welcome these efforts, as attention is diverted from
their health-threatening policies. If the evidence for the effectiveness
of lifestyle approaches to promoting health and well-being was established,
this could all be countenanced. Sadly, this is not the case. As Picard
himself has pointed out: material conditions of life, income, housing,
employment effects trump the effects of lifestyle.
