Re: The fat hits the fan, July 12, 2002. Gary Taubes accurately identifies how
junk science, motivated by self interest on the part of researchers and service
providers and supported by ideological leanings of governments, can lead to
glaringly erroneous health recommendations. It has been known since the 19th
century that the best way to support the health of populations is to provide
adequate living conditions and resources to support human development. It has
also been known since the 19th century that the best way to harm health is to
weaken social services, create poverty, and weaken community solidarity. A
prescription for poor health which is being followed across Canada -- but
especially in Alberta and Ontario.
