World Conference on Health Promotion and Health Education, Melbourne, 26-30
April 2004

Abstract Submission closes 31 October (<http://www.health2004.com.au>)

The Program
Each Conference day will with begin with a Plenary Session followed by up to
16 concurrent sessions that will run in the mid-morning, and early and late
afternoon timeslots. These sessions will be based on the main themes:
Maintaining diversity in a global culture for health and wellbeing; shifting
the balance of power - new forms of governance and participation for better
health; vision, purpose and leadership - exploring different pathways to
health; setting an agenda for promoting Indigenous health; addressing stress
from civil dislocation, unemployment, cultural change and restoring the
balance between environment, health and spirituality:

A wide range of topics will be addressed such as: drug control and harm
reduction, tobacco control, HIV/AIDS, indigenous and ethnic minority issues,
mental health, physical activity promotion, environment and urbanisation,
peace and health, governance, workplace health, partnerships, policy forums,
governance, multicultural health, school health, globalisation, health and
trade, healthy ageing, health promotion theory, and youth. Many of these
topics will be part of the streams around which the Program is being
developed.

Mental Health Stream: One of the major challenges facing our society is the
state of our mental health and wellbeing. Widespread acknowledgement of the
increase in mental ill health across the world provides an opportunity for
health promoters to share knowledge about what works. The Mental Health
Promotion stream of the World Conference provides such an opportunity, with
three days of activities. For more information please contact Irene Verins
([log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>) at
VicHealth.

Cervical Cancer Screening Stream: The Cancer Council Australia will be
hosting a one-day stream on cervical screening. which will provide
opportunities to share knowledge and showcase existing good practice in
cervical screening programs, highlight future opportunities and new
technologies, raise awareness of access and equity issues of disadvantaged
women and allow for the creation of networks to facilitate and maintain
collaborative relationships. For further information, please email
