Subject: Request for Applications: Educational and Behavioral Interventions
to Overcome Barriers to Insulin T

Reminder: Deadline March 19

Request for Applications: Educational and Behavioral Interventions to
Overcome Barriers to Insulin Therapy

The American Diabetes Association and Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals announce
funding for educational and behavioral clinical outcomes studies supporting
patients with type 2 diabetes in making the decision to choose, initiate and
continue insulin therapy. Some examples of research areas that would be
supported by this initiative include:

· Interventions for overcoming barriers to insulin therapy in different age
or ethnic groups. Such barriers might include needle anxiety, self-blame,
weight gain, hypoglycemia, and "psychological insulin resistance".

· Methods to provide ongoing self-management support through diabetes
education or case-management systems.

· Interventions that promote patient self-management skills including
self-monitoring, problem solving and decision-making skills.

· Studies that focus on improving diabetes self-management by exploring the
patient's level of understanding (e.g. cognitive representation) of
diabetes, and how this understanding affects their health behaviors and
quality of life.

Applications are not limited in scope to the above examples, however all
successful applicants must address the overall theme of the initiative by
developing studies that support patients with type 2 diabetes making the
transition to or continuing insulin therapy.

The application can be found on the ADA website at
http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-research/research-grant-application-forms/A
DA-grant-opportunities/ADA-current-grant-opportunities/targeted-awards.jsp#n
ovo. A Letter of Intent (LOI) must be submitted to the Association by March
15, 2004. The letter should include a brief description of the area of
research the project intends to cover. The application should be received
on or before April 30, 2004, with anticipated funding July 1, 2004.
