        The CEO is responsible to the Board of Directors for the effective management and

 - Call for Abstracts: XVII World Conference on Health Promotion and Health Education
        "Health: An investment for a just society" is the theme of this year's conference,
organized by the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE).  It will take
place July 15-20, 2001, in Paris France.  Deadline for submission of abstracts is October 31,
2000.

        "La sante : un Investissement pour une societe equitable" est le theme de la
Conference cette annee, qui aura lieu du 15 au 20 juillet, 2000.  La conference est organisee par
l'Union Internationale de Promotion de la Sante et d'Education pour la Sante (UPIES) et la date
limite de remise d'un resume de communication est le 31 octobre, 2000.

 - El Salvador, Jamaica, and Uruguay Elected to PAHO Executive Committee
        El Salvador, Jamaica, and Uruguay were elected September 27 to the Executive
Committe of the PAHO's Directing Council, replacing Antigua and Barbuda, Ecuador, and
Mexico, whose terms expire this week.  Other countries making up the nine-member Executive
Committee include Cuba, Nicaragua, the United States of America, Bolivia, Canada, and
Guyana.

 - VI Jornadas Latinoamericanas de bioetica - del 5 al 7 de noviembre en La Plata, Argentina.
        El thema es: "Bioetica en la encrucijada: Entre la Manipulacion de la vida y atencion de
la salud".

 - Public Health Genetics to be Crucial in Treating Infectious Disease, Expert Says
        New discoveries in what is being called "Public Health Genetics" will be crucial in
harnessing genetics technologies to track emerging infectious diseases and improve their
diagnosis, treatment and prevention, accoording to a top scientist at the National Institutes of
Health.
