I always wonder about these conferences and the fees they charge. The salaries (and therefore the time) of nearly all the speakers is funded by their fellow citizens. No doubt their education was also funded by citizens. As is much of the research they will be speaking about. Why are we paying again? Even if it is in the aptly named Windsor Great Park.

Subject: Social Determinants of Health Conference 27 - 29 January, Windsor Great Park

***CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT***

Social Determinants of Health:
Investigating inequalities, research gaps, and best practice 27th - 29th January 2014, Cumberland Lodge, Windsor Great Park, UK http://www.cumberlandlodge.ac.uk/programme/Forthcoming+events/Social+Determinants+of+Health

Since the Marmot Review reported its findings on health inequalities, there has been increased political concern with the social determinants of health. This was reflected in the 2011 Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health, and in the UK, the reforms to the health and social care system set out in the Health and Social Care Act emphasised the need for an integrated health and social services approach to improving healthcare outcomes. Alongside this, the Chief Medical Officer for England made the social determinants of health a key aspect of her first annual report (Vol.1 published November 2012).

This conference will examine the progress on integrated approaches to health, take stock of health inequalities in the UK, give an honest examination of the research gaps, and foster cross-sector collaboration on sharing best practice in eliminating health inequality.

Speakers confirmed include

Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer for England Councillor Sir Merrick Cockell, Chairman, Local Government Association Professor Peter Goldblatt, Deputy Director UCL Institute of Health Equity Duncan Selbie, Chief Executive, Public Health England Julia Unwin, Chief Executive, Joseph Rowntree Foundation
