About the Internet Healthcare Coalition

The Coalition is an international, non-partisan, non-profit organization
dedicated to promoting quality healthcare resources on the Internet.
Founded in 1997, the Coalition's membership represents every sector of the
Internet health space, including consumers, patient advocates, commercial
developers of health information, health professionals, medical
librarians, government officials, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. The
goal of the Coalition is to educate healthcare consumers, health
professionals and others about the evolving issues relating to the quality
of Internet health resources and information. The Coalition also fulfills
a valuable role in building consensus among the many stakeholders involved
in online health information quality issues. In October 1999, responding
to calls from within the Internet Health community, the Coalition launched
its ongoing 'eHealth Ethics Initiative" to provide a forum for the
development of a universal set of ethical principles for health-related
Web sites.

This conference is shaping up to be a major event in the history of the
ehealth ethics "movement." With nearly 40 speakers and over 30
presentations, the program is truly awesome and timely. This meeting is
likely to be the one "sure bet" in Las Vegas for a long time to come!
Participate and help "tame the wild west" image of health on Internet.

The meeting will address many of the issues brought up in a recent AMA News
article - "Developing rules for the Web: Concern over how health information
is presented on the Internet has prompted several groups to step up to the
challenge of developing ethics for medical sites."
 http://www.ama-assn.org/sci-pubs/amnews/pick_00/prsa0731.htm ).

All the groups mentioned in this article -- HON, Hi-Ethics, AMA, Internet
Healthcare Coalition -- as well as some not mentioned -- FTC, medCERTAIN,
URAC -- that are taking the lead in developing ethical guidelines for
ehealth, will be at the IHC conference -- speaking, meeting behind the
scenes (expect some important announcements to be made at the conference),
interacting with the audience.

POWER PANEL
Dr. George Lundberg will challenge representatives from the above
organizations to speak publically about "Compliance in the Real World" --
see http://www.ihealthcoalition.org/community/present-conf2000.html#power I
cannot think of anyone more appropriate to stir up controversy and get
people moving. Dr. Lundberg has put the process of developing an ehealth
code of ethics in perspective:

"The peer review process applied to medical publishing was begun in England
and in France at about the same time during the 18th century,
Yet it was not until 1978 that the International Committee of Medical
Journal

Editors was convened to write the rules of ethical behaviour for authors,
editors, and publishers. Nearly 300 years. I call that "Gutenberg Time".
The medical internet was begun in 1994-1995. By the year 2000 we have not
one, but several, reasonably compatible sets of ethical rules of behaviour
for authors, editors, and publishers. Five years. I call that "Internet
Time"."

-- George Lundberg, M.D.

Here are some other highlights from the program (see
