No 3 March 2005
Welcome to the third newsletter and to all new subscribers. With less than
one month to go, the 5th Australian Women's Health Conference promises to
be one of the premier conference events of the year! We work to hold this
conference once every five years, so this newsletter highlights some of the
networking and information sharing opportunities you can expect from the
conference.
Program book
All registrants will be provided with a program book including abstracts.
This will be available with your conference satchel when you register.
Program
The Program is now finalised and can be found on the website. Inevitably
there are changes that are out of our control, but we are endeavouring to
keep the website up to date in a timely way.
The Program Committee have put together a wonderful program. Highlights
include papers by Professor Ilona Kickbusch who has a new website you may
like to check out at:
http://www.ilonakickbusch.com/en/home/index.shtml
Professor Pat Armstrong from Canada, Associate-Professor Carol Thomas from
the UK and many eminent Australians are also not to be missed.
The very large number of abstracts which have been accepted are organized
into paper sessions, video, posters and performances. Room and time
allocations will be published in the program book.
Posters will be on display throughout the conference, near the Exhibition
Hall to allow you time to browse and talk to their authors.
Arts into the program
The theme for art events in the program is about celebrating the cultural
diversity of women in the arts in Victoria. Melbourne is one of the most
multi-cultural cities in the world. With only a small budget we look
forward to showcasing some of the talented women who represent and
celebrate cultural diversity. You will be surprised, moved to laughter and
perhaps tears by the performances we have selected and which showcase the
richness of women's talents.
Conference Party
The Conference Party is certainly not one to be missed. It will be held on
the Docklands at Atlantic South Wharf a party venue with great views of
Melbourne's city lights and a very fun atmosphere. Venue location details
and transport options, which include water taxisalong the Yarra will be
made available at the conference. Entertainment includes comedian Sue-Ann
Post and the music continues until 11pm. If you haven't already booked for
this entertaining evening of fun and laughter, tickets will be available at
the registration desk.
Welcome drinks
We are delighted that the Victorian Minister of Health, the Hon Bronwyn
Pike, will address the conference during the Welcome drinks which will be
from 5-6pm on Wednesday 20th April. As the Victorian Parliament is sitting
that week, Minister Pike will not be able to attend the opening conference
ceremony.
Networking
Networking will of course, be happening throughout the conference. In
addition, spaces have been reserved for networking meetings and talking
circles. Bookings for meeting spaces should be made through Michelle
Forbes of The Meeting Planners: [log in to unmask]

We will be welcoming a very large number of international women. If you have
thoughts and suggestions about developing stronger international links or
you are interested in meeting during the conference for discussion, please
contact Gwen Gray at [log in to unmask]

A meeting time and place has been set aside for State and Territory Health
department women's policy officers.

Weather
April in Melbourne is usually one of the best seasons of the year with
sunny days and mild evenings. Still it is Melbourne so the temperature can
get chilly and the weather unpredictable so be prepared.

Recreation
The conference venue is opposite Albert Park which provides easy walking
tracks around the Lake and a fully equipped sports centre is located in the
Park for those who wish to access swimming or gymnasium facilities.

Registrations

The Registration desk will be open from 9am-5pm each day of the conference.
A message board will be available for posting of messages.

Pre Conference consultation meeting National Women's Health Policy

A workshop plan is being developed for this meeting which will be designed
to gather ideas about new approaches to national women's health
policy. The meeting will commence at 1.30pm on Tuesday 19 April, in the
Ballroom of the Carlton Crest Hotel, Melbourne. This meeting is being
supported by the Australian Women's Health Network. If you wish to attend
the meeting, please RSVP on your registration form.

Overall, the Conference offers a rare opportunity for discussion, debate
and deliberations on a whole range of emerging issues in and for, women's
health it is only once each five years that a gathering with such breadth
and depth is held in Australia. We encourage all participants to spend
time at the conference over the three days, to meet others, share
information and develop networks. There will be opportunities to focus on
solutions to existing problems; to address and influence policy-makers in
relation to areas of concern; to inform practitioners about your work; and
learn about their work we look forward to having you join us in April in
Melbourne.
