  Population and public health research involves research aimed at improving the health of populations in Canada and globally, through a better understanding of: the interactions among social, cultural, economic, environmental and occupational factors that determine human health and development; the population- and community-level policy and program interventions that improve the health of populations. 

  The Canadian Institutes of Health Research's Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH) is collaborating with the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA), Canadian Institute for Health Information-Canadian Population Health Initiative (CPHI) and the Public Health Agency of Canada to launch the 2nd annual award program in applied population and public health (PPH) research for Masters and PhD level students enrolled in a Canadian academic institution. This year, CPHA is also pleased to announce a very special award, the Dr. John Hastings CPHA Student Award, formerly the CPHA Student Award. This award is renamed in honour and memory of Dr. John Hastings and his commitment and belief in students as the future of public health in our country.

  The purpose of this award program is to recognize excellence in the next generation of population and public health researchers, policy-makers and practitioners. Up to five awards (two at the Masters level and three at the PhD level) will be presented to successful student applicant(s) at the September 2005 CPHA Conference in Ottawa, Ontario. The value of each award will be: $300 (for two Masters level students), $500 (for two PhD level students) and $1,000 (for one PhD level student - Hastings Award). Travel, accommodation and registration fees incurred by successful applicants who attend the CPHA Conference will be covered by the partnering organizations, up to a maximum of $1,500. CPHA is also pleased to provide a 1-year, complimentary CPHA membership to each successful applicant. Successful research project descriptions will be published in a future issue of the Canadian Journal of Public Health. Student abstracts will be highlighted and integrated in the conference program.

  La recherche sur la santé publique et des populations vise notamment l'amélioration de la santé des populations au Canada et à l'échelle mondiale, en favorisant une meilleure compréhension : des interactions entre les facteurs sociaux, culturels, économiques, environnementaux et liés au milieu de travail qui ont une incidence déterminante sur la santé et le développement de l'être humain; des interventions sous forme de politiques et de programmes au niveau des populations et des collectivités qui contribuent à l'amélioration de la santé. 

  L'Institut de la santé publique et des populations (ISPP) des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada (IRSC) travaille en collaboration avec l'Association canadienne de santé publique (ACSP), l'Initiative sur la santé de la population canadienne (ISPC) de l'Institut canadien d'information sur la santé et l'Agence de santé publique du Canada, afin de lancer le 2e programme annuel de bourses en recherche appliquée sur la santé publique et des populations destinées aux étudiants au niveau de la maîtrise et du doctorat qui sont inscrits dans un établissement d'enseignement supérieur du Canada. Cette année, l'ACSP est heureuse de présenter une bourse très spéciale, soit la bourse d'études Dr John Hastings, appelée auparavant bourse d'études de l'ACSP. Cette bourse a été renommée pour honorer la mémoire du Dr John Hastings et souligner son engagement et sa confiance en la capacité des étudiants à assurer l'avenir de la santé publique au Canada.

  L'objet de ce programme de bourses est de reconnaître l'excellence parmi la prochaine génération de chercheurs, de décideurs et de praticiens dans le domaine de la santé de la population et la santé publique. On présentera jusqu'à cinq bourses (deux au niveau de la maîtrise et trois au niveau du doctorat) aux candidats retenus à l'occasion de la Conférence de l'ACSP en septembre 2005 à Ottawa (Ontario). La valeur de chaque bourse sera de 300 $ (pour deux étudiants au niveau de la maîtrise), de 500 $ (pour deux étudiants au niveau du doctorat) et de 1000 $ (pour un étudiant au niveau du doctorat - bourse Hastings). Les frais de déplacement, d'hébergement et d'inscription engagés par les candidats retenus qui assisteront à la Conférence de l'ACSP seront couverts par les organismes subventionnaires jusqu'à concurrence de 1500 $. L'ACSP est par ailleurs heureuse de permettre à chacun des candidats retenus de joindre gratuitement ses rangs, à titre de membre, pour une période d'un an. Les descriptions des projets de recherche retenus seront publiées dans un numéro futur de La revue canadienne de santé publique. Les principaux points des résumés des étudiants seront dégagés et intégrés dans le programme de la conférence.
