Imagine Canada's Nonprofitscan.ca site is about the best Canadian site for
that kind of information.  It has a few reports that contain good
information on some of the challenges. Look down the page a bit for these
reports:

Recruitment and Retention of Volunteers

Financial Challenges of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations
