Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities
New Curriculum Streams!
The Atlantic Summer Institute (ASI) is proud to be launching a full workshop
series within a structured Curriculum for the 2007 Institute. This will
emphasize collaboration and innovation and will result in a certificate that
verifies participation in quality professional training. The Curriculum
supports the Institute’s vision of continuing to expand partnerships and
lead knowledge for safe and healthy communities in Atlantic Canada.
What’s the Curriculum all about?
The objectives of using a Curriculum Framework for the Institute is to
filter three fields of knowledge; Health Promotion, Crime Prevention and
Social Development through the lens of the Circle of Health.
The Institute is offering a Curriculum Framework through which to structure
and guide the program this year. These are offered in three streams;
* Foundations: Concepts and Theories For people who are new to the
Institute and those who want a refresher on the links between Health
Promotion and Crime Prevention through Social Development. The three
workshops in this stream will provide for a deeper understanding of the
fundamental concepts and theories for creating healthy and safe communities.
* Concepts and Theories Integration: Case Study Application: For
people who have completed the Foundations Stream or who want to integrate
their knowledge in a guided method. The three workshops in this stream will
build capacity to use comprehensive frameworks to plan across Health
Promotion, Crime Prevention and Social Development sectors.
* Leadership: For people who want an advanced focus on leadership, the
three workshops will develop the model and practice of shared
(collaborative) leadership among sectors and within communities with a
particular emphasis on power influence and innovative problem solving.
The Foundations Stream was piloted at the 2006 Institute in English and as a
result of its success will be offered as a bilingual stream this year.
Concepts and Theories Integration: Case Study Application and Leadership
Streams will be piloted in English at this year’s Institute with French
language support offered.
Prior to the Institute, participants will be contacted to register for one
of the three streams.
Also this year the Institute is offering a certificate of participation for
those who have attended three workshops in the same stream. Register online

The 2007 Atlantic Summer Institute on Healthy and Safe Communities will be
held August 21-24 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The event is
sponsored by the Atlantic Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health and
supported by the Government of Canada’s National Crime Prevention Strategy.
Hosts for this year’s Institute are the UPEI Centre for Life Long Learning
and the PEI Health Research Institute.

Institut d’été sur les collectivités sûres et en santé au Canada atlantique
Nouveaux volets au programme éducatif!
L’Institut d’été de l’Atlantique (IEA) est heureux de lancer pour son
édition de 2007 une série complète d’ateliers dans le cadre d’un programme
éducatif structuré. Ce programme mettra l’accent sur la collaboration et
l’innovation, et mènera à l’obtention d’un certificat attestant la
participation à une formation professionnelle de qualité. Le programme
éducatif soutient la vision de l’Institut de continuer à étendre les
partenariats et à renforcer les connaissances pour assurer la sécurité et la
santé des collectivités au Canada atlantique.
En quoi consiste le programme d’enseignement?
On a recours à un programme éducatif cadre pour l’Institut, afin de
circonscrire trois champs de savoir, soit la promotion de la santé, la
prévention du crime et le développement social, sous l’angle de la Roue de
la santé.
L’Institut offre un programme éducatif cadre à l’aide duquel structurer et
orienter le programme cette année. Il est offert en trois volets :
* Fondements de la vie communautaire : concepts et théories
Pour ceux et celles qui viennent de se joindre à l’Institut, et pour ceux et
celles qui veulent un rappel des liens entre la promotion de la santé et la
prévention du crime par le développement social. Les trois ateliers de ce
volet apporteront une meilleure compréhension des concepts fondamentaux et
des théories pour créer des collectivités sûres et en santé.
* Intégration des concepts et des théories : application d’études de
cas
Pour ceux et celles qui ont complété le volet sur les fondements de la vie
communautaire ou qui désirent intégrer leurs connaissances à l’aide d’une
méthode éclairée. Les trois ateliers de ce volet renforceront les capacités
à se servir de cadres globaux pour planifier conjointement les secteurs de
la promotion de la santé, de la prévention du crime et du développement
social.
* Leadership
Pour ceux et celles qui veulent une formation plus approfondie en
leadership. Les trois ateliers permettront d'améliorer le modèle et la
pratique du leadership partagé (collaboratif) au sein des secteurs et des
collectivités en insistant particulièrement sur l'influence de l'autorité et
le recours à une approche novatrice en matière de résolution des problèmes.
Le volet sur les fondements de la vie communautaire a été présenté comme
essai pilote au cours de l’Institut de 2006 en anglais et, vu sa réussite,
il sera offert comme volet bilingue cette année.
Le volet Intégration des concepts et des théories : application des études
de cas, et celui sur le leadership seront mis à l’essai en anglais à
l’Institut de cette année, assortis d’un soutien en langue française.
Avant le début de l’Institut, on communiquera avec les participants pour
qu’ils s’inscrivent à l’un des trois volets.
Cette année, l’Institut offre aussi un certificat de participation à ceux
qui auront assisté à trois ateliers dans le même volet. Inscrivez-vous en

L’Institut d’été sur les collectivités sûres et en santé au Canada
atlantique de 2007 aura lieu du 21 au 24 août à Charlottetown
(Île-du-Prince-Édouard). L’Institut est parrainé par le Centre d’excellence
de l’Atlantique pour la santé des femmes, et reçoit l’appui de la Stratégie
nationale pour la prévention du crime du gouvernement du Canada. Cette
année, les hôtes de l’Institut sont le UPEI Centre for Life Long Learning et
le PEI Health Research Institute.
