Hi Nancy and everyone,

It seems to me that the response you included as an example of an unwanted message was indeed addressed to one person, since it answered that person's question.

But it was well on-topic for the list, included no personal comments or objectionable information, and let the rest of us learn about a potentially valuable resource. In that way it was a model of a great listserv post.

One of the side benefits of a listserv -- indeed, one of a list's essential reasons for being -- is these serendipitous discoveries through people's generous information-sharing. If everyone answered people's questions only through backchannel e-mails to the questioner alone, we'd all miss out on a great deal of interesting stuff.

PS -- All-caps comes across as SHOUTING and makes it difficult for people to "hear" you.
