Be very afraid:  In "The Monster at Our Door," "City of Quartz" author Mike Davis warns that urban poverty has created the perfect conditions for bird flu to kill millions of people.

You'll have to watch an ad before seeing the article, unless you're a Salon member.  Sorry about that, but it's an interesting piece -- he talks about dense megaslums, globalization, etc. and how they create public health challenges.  I think the main public health bit is on page 3.
