WISE's first Scarlet Letter Campaign workshop took place November 24th in
Victoria and we couldn't be more thrilled with the outcome.

Those thinking of arranging for a WISE Scarlet Letter Campaign workshop in
their community might be interested in reading the participants' evaluations
of the Victoria event:

http://www.wise-bc.org/PDF/WISE_Scarlet_Letter_Workshop_Evaluation_Victoria_Nov06.pdf
(or http://tinyurl.com/yf5gbo)

The workshops are designed primarily for women in poverty and unite

* social inclusion
* listening to women in poverty;
* demonstrating to women in poverty how they might TAKE THE LEAD in
educating their community about poverty and mobilizing it to take ACTION for
change; and
* connecting women in poverty with others in their community who support
this initiative

Among the objectives:
1. Awareness by women in poverty of the WISE movement, which is led by women
just like them.
2. Understanding by women in poverty and members of the wider community that
poverty:
   * is the key social determinant of health;
   * affects individuals, their families and their communities;
   * has systemic and broader societal causes in public attitudes and
government policies; and
   * can be significantly reduced and prevented through changes in public
attitudes, which in turn affect policy.
3. Increase the sense of belonging and control among women in poverty by
bringing them into the fold of the WISE movement.
4. Enable the new WISE members to express and TAKE ACTION on their shared
concerns by supporting their efforts to establish a WISE group in their
community.

These objectives were met, including the formation of WISE Victoria.

Next scheduled workshop: Nanaimo, January 24th. Registration deadline:
January 22nd.
