ACT  Administrator  – Building the Momentum Project


TERM:           Part time position (.8 FTE) February 2003 – December 12, 2003
                        With opportunity for renewal

REPORTS TO:     Health Promotion Coordinator, Canadian Cancer Society,
N.S. Division and the ACT Steering Committee

PROJECT:        ACT – Action in your Community against Tobacco – Building the
Momentum.  The Canadian Cancer Society, N.S. Division is sponsoring agency
for this project in partnership with Cancer Care Nova Scotia, Public Health
Services Capital District Health Authority, Addiction Services District 1, 2
and 3, Unit for Population Health and Chronic Disease Prevention, Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. ACT was launched in October 2001 and has
generated a great deal of interest throughout the province. Funding for this
term project has been provided by Health Canada’s Federal Tobacco Control
Strategy and Cancer Care Nova Scotia.


PROJECT PURPOSE:

ACT is designed to increase the ability of community members to take action
against tobacco in their own communities.  ACT has two main components:
·       A tobacco community tool kit to provide community volunteers with
practical evidence-based tobacco control activity ideas for use in their
communities,

·       An  orientation and ongoing support system to both encourage the use of
the tool kit, development of community volunteers and contribute to the
enhancement of the tool kit over time.

The purpose of this project is to build on the momentum generated by ACT
through the recruitment and support of an additional Volunteer ACT Coaches,
the establishment and management of a funding support process for community
volunteers implementing ACT projects, coordinating regional ACT workshops
and supporting the implementation of the ACT communication strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Administrator will work in conjunction with the ACT Steering Committee
and Canadian Cancer Society Health Promotion Coordinator to conduct all
aspects of the project.

Duties will include:
·       Communications with ACT Volunteers
·       Attendance at ACT Steering Committee Meetings
·       Coordination of ACT kits and support materials
·       Administration of volunteer funding support
·       Organization of volunteer orientation session for ACT Coaches
·       Development, administration and report of volunteer needs assessment
·       Coordination of provincial volunteer development workshop
·       Implementation of the Communication Strategy
·       Coordination of project evaluation including telephone interviews


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
·       Demonstrated ability to work within deadlines.
·       Excellent organizational and communication (oral and written) skills.
·       Ability to work independently with minimum of supervision.
·       Community Development Experience
·       Experience working with volunteers
·       Demonstrated experience in project development and management
·       Program Evaluation Experience
·       An understanding of Tobacco Control
