CSIH recently sent an open letter, signed by the co-chairpersons Drs.
Kathryn Hannah and Kevin Chan, to Prime Minister Chretien and the Ministers
of Finance, Health, Environment, Foreign Affairs, International
Cooperation, International Trade and Labour. The letter asked the
Ministers to consider seriously a series of statements, derived from a
recent consultation with non-government organizations in preparation for
the G-8 summit meeting in Italy this month (July), concerning reform of the
World Trade Organization and other trade measures affecting human and
environmental health. The letter also proposed that Canada should engage
in an NGO consultative round, similar to Italy's groundbreaking
undertaking, prior to hosting of the G-8 summit in 2002. Full text of the

PAHO Training Program in International Health - 2002

The Canadian Society for International Health is pleased to announce this
year's Pan American Health Organization's Training Program in International
Health. The Program is oriented towards health professionals living in the
Americas, who show leadership and interest in delving more deeply into the
international dimensions of health. The training process is based on the
participants becoming involved in the work of PAHO through a work-study
format for a period of eleven months starting in January.
The criteria considered in the selection of participants are:
the quality of the candidate's training and professional experience;
the candidate's demonstrated leadership capabilities;
the candidates' own perspectives for his or her participation in the
Program, and the degree of match between the candidates' profile and
the program priorities of the Organization.
The requirements for participating in the Training Program in International
Health are as follows:
- Education: Master's degree in Public Health or equivalent graduate degree
including the social sciences applied to health
- Experience: Minimum of two years' experience directing programs, projects,
or services, in education, or public health research
- Age: Age limit of 35 years as of application deadline
- Nationality: Be a permanent resident of one of the PAHO Member Countries
(Applicants in Canada must be resident of Canada)
- Language: English and Spanish
Deadline for submission of applications: July 31, 2001.
Participants in the Program receive a stipend to cover their basic living
expenses and financial support for settling in Washington (travel and
moving expenses).

CSIH Program Coordinator authors paper in Health Promotion International
Paulette Schatz, Project Director of CSIH's Youth for Health Ukraine-Canada
Project and Coordinator of CSIH's Central and Eastern European Program, has
had a paper published in the most recent issue of Health Promotion
International (Volume 16, Number 2, June 2001). Paulette co-authored with
Dr. K. P. Dzvimbo a paper titled "The adolescent sexual world and AIDS
prevention: a democratic approach to program design in Zinbabwe." Dr.
Dzvimbo is Vice-chancellor of Zimbabwe's Open University. To read the

La SCSI a recemment envoye une lettre ouverte au Premier Ministe
et aux Ministres des Finances, de la Sante, de l'Environnement,
des Affaires etrangeres, de la Cooperation internationale, et du Commerce
international, soussignee par les co-presidents Drs Kathryn Hannah et Kevin
Chan.
Cette lettre demande aux ministres d'etudier avec attention une serie de
declarations, issues des recentes consultations avec les organisations
non gouvernementales en preparation de la prochaine reunion au sommet du
G-8 en Italie ce mois-ci (juillet), ayant trait a la reforme de l'Organisation
Mondiale du Commerce et d'autres mesures commerciales affectant la sante
humaine et environnementale. La lettre propose egalement que le Canada devrait
s'engager dans une ronde de consultations avec les ONG, similaire a celle entreprise
en Italie, avant la tenue du sommet des G-8 de 2002. Le texte de la lettre

Programme 2002 de Formation en Sante Internationale a l'OPS

La Societe canadienne de sante internationale est heureuse d'annoncer le
Programme 2002 de Formation en sante internationale de l'Organisation
panamericaine de la sante. Ce programme vise les jeunes professionnels de
la sante des Ameriques qui font preuve de leadership et d'un vif interet
envers la dimension internationale de leurs activites dans le domaine de la
sante. Les participants au programme sont incorpores au sein de l'OPS en
qualite de "residents" pendant une periode de onze mois commencant fin
janvier 2002.
Les criteres consideres lors de la selection des participants sont les
suivants: la qualite de la formation et de l'experience professionnelle du(de la)
candidat(e); ses qualites de leadership; le but recherche par le(la) candidat(e)
en participant a ce programme, et le degre de relation entre le profil des candidat(e)s
et les priorites des programmes de l'Organisation panamericaine de la sante.
Les exigences demandees pour pouvoir participer sont les suivantes :
- Education: Maitrise en sante publique ou un diplome equivalent incluant des
sciences sociales appliquees a la sante
- Experience: Minimum de deux ans d'experience dans des programmes, projets
ou services, en education ou en recherche sur la sante publique
- Age: 35 ans maximum au 31 juillet 2001
- Nationalite: Etre un resident permanent de l'un des pays membres de l'OPS
(Les candidats faisant leur demande au Canada doivent etre residents du
Canada au moment de la demande)
- Langue: Anglais avec une connaissance de l'espagnol comme langue de travail
Date limite de reception des demandes: 31 juillet 2001
Chaque participant recoit une allocation pour couvrir ses frais de
subsistance. De plus, l'OPS couvre les frais de deplacement et de
demenagement du participant, ainsi que l'achat de livres ou de materiel
didactique requis aux fins du programme.

Publication d'un article redige par un membre de la SCSI dans
Health Promotion International
Paulette Schatz, directrice du projet de la SCSI Jeunes en Sante
Ukraine-Canada et coordonnatrice du Programme Europe centrale et de l'Est
