The Pan American Health Organization calls for increased attention to
mental health problems throughout the Americas for World Health Day 2001
-------------------
Washington, April 2, 2001 (PAHO) -- The Pan American Health Organization
today called for increased attention to mental health problems throughout
the Americas for World Health Day April 7, which focuses this year on the
theme of mental health.
Dr. George Alleyne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization, said,
"This is a unique opportunity to work together to improve mental health,
one of the most important public health issues for our people.
Unfortunately, mental health today has a very modest place in the ranking
of our priorities. Despite all the progress made in many other aspects of
health, mental health does not yet receive the attention and resources that
it deserves."
"Stop Exclusion - Dare to Care" is the Organization's message for the
mental health campaign, that will culminate in a World Health Report on
mental health scheduled for release later this year. More at

The Canadian Cancer Etiology Research Network (CCERN)
---------------------------
The Canadian Cancer Etiology Research Network (CCERN) is an innovative
approach to enhancing Canadian etiologic research. It is a broad network,
open to individuals with interests in cancer etiology from the perspective
of a range of cancer risk factors, from a variety of disciplines, and from
relevant settings, including academia, government, cancer registries, and
the health sector, anywhere in the country. With funding from the National
Cancer Institute of Canada, CCERN facilitates research by forming and
fostering the work of multidisciplinary research teams.
CCERN is comprised of two components designed to facilitate the network's
objectives: Virtual Research Centres (VRCs) and a Communications Program.
VRCs are the core of CCERN. Investigators participating in VRCs generate
research objectives and execute research in areas defined in terms of five
general classes of risk factors: diet / lifestyles, environment /
occupation, genetics, hormones, and infections. Using the CCERN Web Site at
http://www.ccern.org/ and facilities of the Communications Program,
investigators can identify potential Canadian colleagues with complementary
skills and research resources to develop competitive grant applications.
CCERN's Chat Rooms and Discussion Board allow researchers across the
country to work together to develop research protocols.
Where applications can be made more competitive by collection of
preliminary information, seed funding can be obtained through CCERN. High
quality applications are assured by establishing methods to facilitate
consultation and discussion, and by rigorous peer review. Proposals for
funding are accepted for review. Those interested in applying, please go to
the CCERN web site http://www.ccern.org/ and contact the chair of VRC with
which you wish to work.
For more information, or to become a member, contact CCERN at
mailto:[log in to unmask] or call (416) 978-0189. Alternatively, you could go
to the web site at http://www.ccern.org/ and fill out the form online.
