I saw that session on the program, and hoped this review might get read 
by a few folks before they hit the road or crowd onto a plane. I won't 
be there this year, but I'll be interested to know, in particular, how 
that session goes. Harris's book boils some of the difficult issues of 
HF down to the basics. He acknowledges Twain putting the words into his 
characters' mouths to show "the racism of the era"  but in the next 
second says Twain is therefore racist, because that forbidden word is, 
well, the Forbidden Word. My initial reaction to the book was to stop 
reading it, or maybe give it a Briefly Noted review, and avoid touching 
the third rail altogether. That initial reaction may have been 
influenced by the residual "white boy" still buried in me somewhere. But 
the human being in me urged me to keep reading. By the end of the book I 
became convinced there are things Harris does not understand about Mark 
Twain and Huck Finn, and there are things I don't understand about 
Harris's response to the book. So, how do we bridge these failures of 
understanding, and if we do, then what? Obviously, I'm expecting that 
session to provide a conclusive answer to this question!
