ADMS 3750 Behavioural and Social Aspects of Health

Course Overview

Some fifty years ago the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as
"a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not
merely the absence of disease or injury."  While physical health remains
the primary emphasis of health care, a significant amount of evidence has
been developed elucidating the mental and social aspects of health.  On the
basis of literature from medical sociology, social epidemiology, and health
psychology, this course examines evidence and concepts that have been
important in the development of knowledge about behavioural and social
aspects of health, collected under the rubric of "determinants of health."

By the end of the course, students should be able to identify important
behavioural and social determinants of health and to discuss critically
relevant conceptual and evidential issues regarding such determinants.
Students will also have investigated the application of knowledge about
behavioural and social determinants of health in professional health
service settings...
