Check out the Ontario Health Promotion Email Bulletin's recent feature article and resources from Susan Snelling on the working poor population of Greater Sudbury - and public health's response. It is very timely: the Ontario government announced that it will increase the minimum wage to $8.00 as of February 1, 2007. The move has provoked a debate about what constitutes a "living wage" and whether raising the minimum wage is good or bad for business and the economy. The Sudbury & District Public Health unit partnered with researchers from Laurentian University and the University of Toronto to get a better look at the low-wage earners in their own community and the project is profiled in "A Needs Assessment of Sudbury's Working Poor Population." <http://www.ohpe.ca/ebulletin/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8198&Itemid=78> Related Resources Work-related Reports from the Canadian Policy Research Network <http://www.ohpe.ca/ebulletin/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8199&Itemid=65> Tackling Health Inequities through Public Health Practice: A Handbook for Action <http://www.ohpe.ca/ebulletin/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8202&Itemid=65> Growinggap.ca Fact Sheets <http://www.ohpe.ca/ebulletin/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8203&Itemid=65> Urban Poverty Project 2007 <http://www.ohpe.ca/ebulletin/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8204&Itemid=65> Fairness at Work: Federal Labour Standards for the 21st Century <http://www.ohpe.ca/ebulletin/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8205&Itemid=65> Minimum Wage Campaigns <http://www.ohpe.ca/ebulletin/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8201&Itemid=64> Let's get a discussion going on the issues suggested in this article and in the debate on living wages.
