Reading Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat is essential, hang in there til
he admits that the world is not really flat, since so few can participate
in the flattening.

Also Great Influenza by Barry - if you want to know how the modern medical
school model came to be, it is here and also how the model is likely to get
changed as well.

These are great works that integrate the sense of class and health
distribution and why things came to be and how they are likely to change.

One thing is apparent in a flat world. Universities no longer have the
monopoly on information. Passionate people working part time will be doing
much more. Passionate and organized people will be accomplishing much more.
Teamwork on projects by folks at all levels and all walks is also possible.

This can be for very good things and for very bad things.

I think we all are for very good, but if we do not all do our jobs better,
there will be those that organize for very bad. As bad as things are, I can
assure you that there is potential for much worse.
