Exploratory Research on Food and Schools in Ontario,
Modest Stipends Available

The Ontario Farm to School Network has received a $10,000 grant from the
Centre for Urban Health Initiatives (CUHI) to conduct exploratory studies
in 5 areas:

1.	A review of existing food programs in public schools directly connected
with farms in Canada, the US and the UK with a view to identifying keys to
success.

2.	A review of the Ontario Ministry of Education’s curriculum guidelines
for grades K to 12 as they relate to food issues from agriculture through
to healthy eating practices, identifying strengths and weaknesses.

3.	A review of public attitudes on food issues (compiling survey data and
news reports) pertaining to youth and schools – school lunch, junk food,
advertising, etc. in Ontario and across Canada.

4.	A preliminary survey of the attitudes of children, teachers and parents
to an existing healthy-food program in one urban, multicultural elementary
school (K to 8).

5.	Thematically-guided interviews with a few key political and policy
leaders in public education – school board trustees, Ministry of Education
officials, elected politicians – on the responsibilities of schools to
provide their students with healthy food choices and quality food
education in Ontario.


In early June, we will award 5 contracts of $2,000 each for reports
detailing findings in these areas.

Reports are to be completed by October 15, 2006.

stating your interest in, and qualifications for, the chosen assignment.
