Subject: Health Promotion and Theologians
Recent CLICK4HP discussions suggest a confusion regarding the meaning and role of theology (and theologians).
Theology is a human endeavour (i.e., construct) that attempts develop and systematize our understanding of the divine and its relation to our human experience.
It is important to distinguish between theology, faith and religion, and between theologians and priests.
Health promotion often seems more like a faith or religion than a theology. This is particular apparent when it tries to establish and maintain ideological purity, even at the expense of excluding many who are toiling in the same vineyard (apologies for the scriptural allusion). Alas, health promotion even shows signs of having a priestly establishment that takes on the role of ensuring orthodoxy among its followers. Even more disturbing, perhaps, is ascribing priestly power(s) to those who are assumed to have have more direct access to the truth than others among us.
Season's greetings.
