I disagree Dennis. I believe that money alone will not solve the issue. I work in the community and see for myself that those who are considered "poor" spend a lot of money on fast foods - foods that I consider expensive and are most often unhealthy. Also, keep in mind that what is considered "healthy foods" is not expensive to buy.

Evidence from work by Lynn McIntyre at Dalhousie and Val Tarasuk at the
University of Toronto indicates that the best way to increase community capacity
for healthy eating is for people to have enough money to buy food.
Low income people are at special risk for poor dietary behaviours. However
Val's work indicates that low income people spend a greater proportion of their
money on healthy food than not poor peole. The problem is that they dont have
enough money to buy enough healthy food.
Therefore the obvious solution is for public health units and other food related
workers to press the conferwence to increase welfare payments and the minimum
wage so that people can afford to buy food. Or failing that set up bigger abd
netter food banks!
