National Oral Health Month
April 2006

April is National Oral Health Month <http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/servlet/ExternalResourceRedirect.jsp?ExternalURL=http://www.cda-adc.ca/en/cda/news_events/health_month/index.asp>, organized by the Canadian Dental Association <http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/servlet/ExternalResourceRedirect.jsp?ExternalURL=http://www.cda-adc.ca/en/index.asp>.

The theme for 2006 is: Oral Health-Good for Life.TM This year's focus is on the importance of a healthy mouth as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Research shows there may be a link between oral disease and other health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke, as well as pre-term and low birth weight babies.

Although researchers are just beginning to understand how this link works, there is growing evidence that a healthy mouth is essential for a healthy life.

Do your body a favour- go to the dentist!

Here are four healthy tips to practice before you go:

1.	Practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day to remove plaque and bacteria that can cause cavities and gum disease.
2.	Eat a well-balanced diet and avoid sugar. Healthy foods are good for your general and oral health. Nutrients from healthy foods help fight cavities and gum disease.
3.	Check your gums regularly. Look for warning signs of gum disease such as red, shiny, puffy, sore or sensitive gums and report them to your dentist.
4.	Don't smoke. Smoking is a major cause of tooth loss through gum disease and may cause oral cancer.

Earth Month / Earth Day
April 2006 (Earth Day on April 22) Earth Month/Day <http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/servlet/BlobServer?blobtable=ImageFile&blobcol=urlpicture&blobheader=image/gif&blobkey=id&blobwhere=1143051268830&blobnocache=true>

Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide.

More than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity. There are so many events organized, that the entire month of April has grown into Earth Month.

Earth Day Canada

For many years, Earth Day Canada <http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/servlet/ExternalResourceRedirect.jsp?ExternalURL=http://www.earthday.ca/pub/home.php> has coordinated Canadian Earth Day/Earth Month events. The most popular Earth Day events are tree planting, community clean-up and environmental fairs.

What you can do!

1.	Make a habit of turning down your thermostat before going to bed or on vacation.
2.	Install a low-flow aerated showerhead and reduce your water use by as much as 2/3.
3.	Don't idle your vehicle. 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than turning off your engine.
4.	Choose recycled products, products with less packaging, and reusable items.
5.	Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. They last 10 times longer and use 75% less energy than standard light bulbs.

For more information and a list of key events in your area, visit Earth Day Canada <http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/servlet/ExternalResourceRedirect.jsp?ExternalURL=http://www.earthday.ca/pub/home.php>.

7 April 2006 World Health Day http://www.who.int/world-health-day/2006/en/index.html

World Health Day (WHD) is an annual event held on April 7 to mark the establishment of the World Health Organization <http://www.who.int/en/>.
It is an opportunity to raise awareness and call for action on important health issues, focusing on a different theme each year.

Working together for health

The theme of World Health Day, April 7, 2006 <http://www.who.int/world-health-day/2006/en/index.html>
is 'Working together for health!'

Global health workforce in crisis

Health workers - the people who provide health care to those who need it - are the heart of health systems. But around the world, the health workforce is in crisis - a crisis to which no country is entirely immune. The results are evident: clinics with no health workers, hospitals that cannot recruit or keep key staff.

Caring doctors in their own words

who are making a difference.
