No question that the bigger social, political and economic forces are driving increased homelessness.

Peter Marcuse has written a very useful piece recently about global trends in housing. I will post a link to it in a separate e-mail.

thanks.
cuts in the welfare state, the lack of affordable housing, the growing
poverty make sense to me as proximal causes of homelessness. but is there
something else underlying these? not to be too marxian about it, but being
in pittsburgh, i cant help but note the shift in the means of production and
modes of production here. once industrial we are now service. wages have
plummetted. income inequality is growing.
is homelessness in us and canada a product of automation, globalization and
de-industrialization? with the policies of the state driven by these
changes as well?

We have a lot of homelessness in Canada - as in the US, it's an urban,
rural, remote, northern phenomenon.

Most advocates estimate that there will be at least 250,000 people who will
experience homelessness over the course of a year - with about 1.7 million
households (4.5 million people) at risk of homelessness.

The root cause of homelessness in Canada (as most everywhere else) is the
lack of affordable housing and growing poverty (ie. supply and
affordibility).

Our federal government started to massive cuts in national programs in the
1980s, then entirely abandoned housing starting in 1996 by transferring
responsibility for existing housing programs to provinces and territories.
Sub-national governments followed suit in the 1990s, with program and
funding cuts.

There has been a massive increase in homelessess in most parts of Canada in
the past decade.

You can also access some links to studies on homelessness (not sure if all
the links are current) on the Prevention Dividend website at:

Try here. Toronto-based Wellesley Central Health Corporation commissioned a
literature review on homelessness that includes a very comprehensive
bibliography.

I am putting together a small literature review on existing academic and
other
research on the health status of homeless people in Canada. I am looking for

studies that are comprehensive and might be comparable to the type of
community
health surveys undertaken by government agenices.

As far as I know, the 1992 'Street Health Report'
<http://www.tdrc.net/HealthRpt_sec01.pdf>, for Toronto, is the only report
of this kind. I am wondering if anyone knows of any similar reports,
published
or unpublished, that have been created in other parts of the country?

If so, can you please pass on any information you have about them, including

any contact people you may know about or information on how we can get a
hold
of the report?

Thanks very much.
