Media Release Health Care Spending to Reach $130 Billion This Year; per
Capita Spending to Hit $4,000, reports CIHI December 8, 2004

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) compiles health
expenditure information into its National Health Expenditure (NHEX)
database. This database is Canada57;s most comprehensive source of health
expenditure information and is based on a system of classification that is
consistent with international standards for the reporting of health
expenditures.

The NHEX database is used to produce National Health Expenditure Trends.
This annual publication provides current information on total and
public/private health expenditure, health expenditure by province/territory
and per capita, and expenditure by use of funds.

The latest report, National Health Expenditure Trends, 1975-2004, provides
updated information on health expenditure in Canada and includes:

· An overview of health expenditure trends from 1975 to 2004; 2002
figures which are now considered to be an estimate rather than a forecast
and an outlook for 2003 and 2004; and,

· Updated data tables, which contain estimates to 2002 and forecasts
to 2004.

Special features of this year57;s publication are:

· An update of provincial/territorial government health expenditure
by age and sex based on utilization information of major provincial and
territorial health programs; and,

· Four years of provincial/territorial government health expenditure
standardized for differences in the age/sex distribution of provincial
populations.

· A summary of enhancements to the National Health Expenditure
database for the category of Public Health and Administration.
