HOUSING A CHILD AND YOUTH HEALTH ISSUE: Recent Housing Study Completed in
Children's Hospital

The results of the CHEO Housing Checkup are complete.  The self-administered
survey research project examined the housing status of children and youth
accessing emergency health services through the Children's Hospital of
Eastern Ontario (CHEO).  Housing is a child and youth health issue.  The
project was completed by a partnership of researchers and clinicians from a
university-based hospital with community housing organizations and child and
youth focused community organizations.  The Ottawa Child/Youth Housing
Advocacy Initiative (OCHAI) will use the results of the survey to educate
health professionals and will seek to find ways for health professionals to
help move housing forward as a child and youth health issue.  

 

The survey was made available to all eligible youth and families of children
registered in the emergency department during the one month study period of
April, 2005. 

 

1360 surveys were completed and included in the analysis.

 

33% lived in unaffordable housing

*50% of income on housing costs

 

>1/2 lived in housing need          

failed to meet one or more of adequate, suitable, affordable, and stable

 

31 (2.3%) children and youth had used housing shelters 

92 (6.8%) children and youth had stayed with relatives or friends as they
had no place else to stay

 

More than 1/5 (21%) of lone parent families had relied on housing shelters
or stayed with friends or relatives as they had no where else to stay
