People in poverty might well want to read books produced by Dennis, Toba and
Marcia, and books by other authors as well. Dare I say, we might even like
to read them while they're still less than two years old, an option that a
large majority of people have!

However, not only can we not afford to purchase the books, but they may not
be available to us through our public libraries. Below is a message I
received from the local branch of the public library system that serves my
community:

"We are unable to Interlibrary loan this item because books published in
the last 12 months are not available through Interlibrary Loan. This
policy allows other libraries in the province the ability to keep the
most recent titles available for their own customers.

"Instead, I have submitted a suggestion for purchase on your behalf, for
this title. Should VIRL purchase the book, you will automatically be
placed on hold for it."

It takes AT LEAST a year with the VIRL library system for a book to get from
order to shelf, and this is for books that are shipped immediately by the
publishers/distributors on receipt of order. (So the library can't blame the
shipper.)

Of course for some of us there's the possibility of borrowing books at a
nearby university or college campus. For others there is no such
possibility, as there is no nearby campus and/or there is a charge for
library membership for the general public. (There's a local campus in my
community, but the fee for library access is $25/year.)
