Greetings!
The Mark Twain House's "The Trouble Begins at 5:30" series debuts for the fall this Wednesday, September 1, at 5:30 (no less) with a fellow Twichell aficionado, Dwayne Eutsey, speaking on the subject "Never Be in a Hurry to Believe: Did Joe Twichell Save Huck Finn from Hell?"
I met Dwayne early in my researches into the good minister and pal of Mark, and found Dwayne's explorations of the role of liberal religion in Clemens's and Twichell's worldviews to be always original and thought-provoking. The religious life of the time is often set aside in Twain scholarship -- a fact which Hal Bush and I agreed on emphatically, though we didn't agree on everything. Dwayne, too, felt the sad and terrible recent loss of our colleague and commented on it here.
So did Twichell save Huck from Hell? I know this will be a good 'un in this series, viewable by the Twain's Crowdcast system, a step above Zoom, and hosted by the always astute Jodi DeBruyne, the house's Director of Collections.
It's free. Here's a link to more information and registration: https://marktwainhouse.org/event/the-trouble-begins-at-530-never-be-in-a-hurry-to-believe-did-joseph-twichell-save-huck-finn-from-hell/
