Cigarette taxes went up $1 a pack in Texas.

In the early phase "sin taxes" there is likely an impact. This may include
those who experiment.

Over time, the nicotine fix selects out certain individuals.

I suspect that those severely addicted (in more than 1 area), poor, and
stressed remain on cigarettes while those who found it easier to quit and
have more support have done so. In this scenario as taxes approach maximal,
the poor pays an increasing cost with little benefit.

Anyone with research on this area is encouraged to share.
