Hello all,

I'm passing on this request for an official nominator for the CPHA's Ron Draper award. The requester feels her work (detailed below) is a good candidate for the award, but needs a CPHA member to sign her nomination form.

If anyone on this list is a CPHA member and you would be willing to nominate the requester, please contact me directly (my email address is below) and I'll put you in touch with her.

Thanks,

Robyn Kalda

Request follows:

...It is regarding the "2007 Ron Draper Health Promotion Award". For this award, The Canadian Public Health Association's nomination form requires a CPHA member to nominate me. The deadline is February 15th 2007.

A description of what I initiated, created and accomplished is as follows. It is my community work. This lecture series will promote women's health.

I have successfully partnered Women's College Hospital with the Sports Clubs of Canada (Delisle Club) to teach an innovative 3-part course on women's health. It will be free and the women only have to RSVP by phone to attend. I have hired a well-qualified nurse practitioner to teach and distribute handouts for each attendee. The first class was on Thursday Nov 23rd 2006 at 7 p.m. It was the largest turnout for a seminar the Delisle Club has ever experienced!

The course was entitled: "An Evening of Hormones". It focused on menopause. Medical concepts and terminology were addressed in a professional manner. Subsequent classes will follow on Tuesday January 23rd and Tuesday February 20th 2007 at 7 p.m.

The second class I created involves communication and active listening skills. It teaches women how to interview their mothers and maternal grandmothers and their sisters about familial women's health because it is an indication of what a woman will experience. It is not conclusive. We will then learn how to pass this information onto our daughters, nieces, succeeding extended family members and other young women about menopause. The course will also teach us how to be a second set of ears and take notes at doctors appointments should our life partner or families not be able to cope with a diagnosis. It will teach women how to be there for one another.

The third class will encourage women to share their various symptoms and issues they face while going through menopause. These issues may deal with forms of cancer such as lung, breast, uterine or ovarian cancer brought on by hormones. Early detection and education will make a difference. This is my ultimate purpose for my community work in memory of my late mother.

Be advised Indigo and their Trusted Advisor marketing program will be donating books to Women's College Hospital Library. These reference books will bring their collection up-to-date. For the second lecture the following companies are participating: Jo Malone; Vichy Neovidiol; and Laura Mercier. The third evening corporate participants have not been confirmed as yet.

Kindly note, this 3-part lecture series is also a fundraiser for the Midlife and Older Women's Program. Due to cut backs, Women's College Hospital has to charge $5, $10, or $25 per class per person. But what happens to the women who may not be able to afford these classes for whatever reason? I want the nurse/social worker facilitator to allow these women to just come, join the other women, become educated about women's health and obtain a handout. It is to be done in a low key, respectful manner.

It is with great enthusiasm to bring this event to your attention. It will be educational and it will promote annual gynecological examinations. I hope to encourage women to talk about menopause unlike our mothers' generation who did not. It will be the power of the recommended word that will make these seminars a success.
