At the time you posted this message, I went through my bookshelves and sent
you a number of references, but there was one I couldn't find at the time.
However, I just came across it, and I think you are probably still
interested. It is:
The Murder of a Shopping Bag Lady -- Brian Kates
Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, 1985.
It may be hard to find now, but it is a really good book. Kates, a
journalist, was sent to cover a "cheap homicide" for the tabloid he worked
for at that time. He turned it into a book about homelessness, mental
illness, poverty, feminism, immigration, and simple humanity, by
reconstructing the life of a woman who was affected by all these things.
I hope the listserv is continuing to do well.
