In Ontario Canada, social assistance benefits do not bring recipients even
close to the poverty line. Not surprisingly, most recipients are unable to
afford a decent diet and must depend upon food banks to eat.
The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty identified a clause in provincial
legislation that allows a health professional to prescribe a supplemental
food allowance for those who require it. Thousands have been able to take
advatnage of this regulation.
The City of Toronto -- not withstanding it being the place where the
Healthy City Movement originated and currently being led by a "social
democratic" mayor -- is actively opposing these efforts by health and
poverty advocates' efforts to put food into people's mouths.
