Love Your Heart - the SDOH way
(Something I adapted from the Townsend Centre for International Poverty Research at the University of Bristol) http://www.bris.ac.uk/poverty/health%20inequalities.html
The Honourable Minister of Health Promotion, Jim Watson, should actually love Ontarian hearts (rather than encouraging Ontarians to love their own hearts) with the following five simple steps:
1. Don't depend on food banks. If you do, tough luck. vs. Choose lower-fat foods;
2. Do not be disabled or have a disabled child vs. Be more physically active;
3. Don’t
live in damp, low quality housing or be homeless. vs. Avoid excessive alcohol;
4. Don’t
be poor. If you are poor, try not to be poor for too long vs. Be Smoke-Free; and
5. Don’t
work in a stressful low-paid manual job vs. Have blood pressure levels checked regularly.

Love Your Heart On Valentine's Day
McGuinty Government Encourages Good Heart Health For Ontarians
OTTAWA, Feb. 13 /CNW/ To celebrate Heart Health Month, Health
Promotion
Minister Jim Watson is encouraging Ontarians to love their own hearts this
Valentine's Day by following five simple steps for good heart health.
"No matter what your age or stage of life, Valentine's Day is the
perfect
time to love your heart and make a commitment to avoid heart disease," said
Watson.
<<
These heart healthy steps include:
1. Choose lower-fat foods;
2. Be more physically active;
3. Avoid excessive alcohol;
4. Be Smoke-Free; and
5. Have blood pressure levels checked regularly.

In 2006, the Ministry of Health Promotion invested $125,663 in
Heart
Health funding for Ottawa Public Health.
The McGuinty government has invested $3.4 million in the Ontario
Heart
Health Program through the Ministry of Health Promotion in 2006/2007. Over
2,300 community partners deliver more than 700 local programs under the
Ontario Heart Health Program. These programs focus on the modifiable risk
factors for cardiovascular diseases and the prevention of chronic disease.
"Ottawa Public Health is one of 36 provincial Health Units and
one
hospital that work in partnership with the community to deliver effective
health promotion and prevention programs for better heart health," said Dr.
David Salisbury, Ottawa's Medical Officer of Health. "Many of our programs
focus on the risk factors to prevent cardiovascular disease for a
population
of almost one million Ottawa residents in both rural and urban
communities."
The Ministry of Health Promotion was established in June 2005 to
improve
and deliver programs that contribute to healthy living and wellness in this
province. Key priority areas include Ontario's smoke-free strategy, healthy
eating, active living, sport and recreation, injury prevention and mental
health promotion.
