Well that's validating! Thanks for sending that article to the list Dennis.

I've tended to use 'societal' rather than 'social' in my work, largely 
to capture the role of public attitude on the health of whole 
populations. I'm thinking particularly of the sanctioning role public 
attitude plays on people in poverty, since it permeates all societal 
structures (there I go again!). We are viewed as lazy, deserving of our 
situation, or as victims who need saving by better-placed (and better) 
others rather than survivors whose personal autonomy should be respected.

The shaming and disrespect runs through all structures, affecting how 
our neighbours, politicians, potential funders, researchers, etc. view 
us. This in turn affects our health.
