NDP WINS PARLIAMENTARY HEARINGS ON PROSPERITY GAP

OTTAWA - NDP Social Policy critic Tony Martin (Sault Ste. Marie) has won 
crucial parliamentary committee meetings to study the growing prosperity gap 
trapping far too many Canadians in poverty or economic insecurity.

"More and more ordinary Canadians find it unacceptable that the average 
income gap between the richest 20 per cent and the poorest 20 per cent is 
now a staggering $105,400.

The Human Resources and Social Development Committee agreed to Martin's 
motion that called for a minimum of four hearings early this fall after the 
latest reports indicate one in six Canadians still live in poverty - the 
numbers include nearly 1.2 million children.
"Despite low unemployment rates, booming corporate profits and government 
surpluses, the prosperity gap is leaving too many ordinary families behind," 
said Martin.  "This has happened under successive Liberal governments and 
now it's happening under this Conservative government. It's not fair."
Martin wants the MP study to include: Ireland's national poverty plan that 
since the mid-1990s reduced poverty from 15 per cent to 6.8 per cent; 
Quebec's anti-poverty law; and Newfoundland and Labrador's anti-poverty 
strategy committed to becoming the province with the lowest poverty rate by 
2016.
"This study can lay the groundwork for a truly national plan where 
governments set firm targets, create timelines and report annually so 
everyone can see the progress being made against poverty," said Martin.

Reducing the prosperity gap is a top priority for the NDP. Last month, in 
its first 2007 Opposition Day motion, the NDP called for a national 
anti-poverty plan beginning with the re-introduction of the $10 federal 
minimum wage  Last year, the NDP launched its national 'End Poverty in 
Canada' campaign that has already visited 12 communities.
"Our goal is nothing short of a comprehensive national plan to reduce 
poverty in this land of plenty," said Martin. "These hearings are an 
important step to that goal."

OTTAWA - Le critique du NPD en matière de politique sociale, Tony Martin 
(Sault Ste. Marie), a obtenu la tenue de réunions importantes d'un comité 
parlementaire en vue d'étudier le fossé croissant entre les revenus en 
raison duquel trop de Canadiens vivent dans la pauvreté ou dans le doute 
financier.

« De plus en plus de gens trouvent qu'il est inacceptable que le fossé entre 
les revenus moyen entre le 20 % des gens les mieux nantis et le 20 % des 
plus démunis s'élève maintenant à 105 400 $, un chiffre ahurissant. »

Le Comité des ressources humaines et du développement social a accepté la 
motion du député Martin exigeant la tenue d'au moins quatre audiences au 
début de l'automne, compte tenu des derniers rapports selon lesquels un 
Canadien sur six vit dans la pauvreté, dont presque 1,2 millions d'enfants.

« Malgré le fait que le taux de chômage soit bas, malgré les énormes profits 
des corporations et malgré les excédents budgétaires du gouvernement, le 
fossé entre les revenus laisse trop de familles pour compte », a déclaré le 
député Martin. « Cela s'est passé sous des gouvernements libéraux successifs 
et maintenant la tendance se poursuit sous ce gouvernement conservateur. 
C'est injuste. »

Le député Martin tient à ce que l'analyse comprenne : le plan anti-pauvreté 
de l'Irlande, qui a réussi à réduire la pauvreté de 15 % à 6,8 % pendant les 
années 1990; la loi anti-pauvreté du Québec; et la stratégie anti-pauvreté 
de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, qui tient à devenir la province dont le taux de 
pauvreté est le plus bas d'ici 2016.

« Cette étude pourra établir les bases d'un plan national, où les 
gouvernements se fixeront des cibles fermes, s'imposeront des échéanciers et 
en feront rapport chaque année pour que nous puissions tous voir les progrès 
de cette lutte contre la pauvreté », a dit le député Martin.

La réduction du fossé entre les revenus est une priorité essentielle du NPD. 
Le mois dernier, pour sa première motion de l'opposition de 2007, le NPD a 
réclamé un plan anti-pauvreté national, commençant par le rétablissement 
d'un salaire minimum fédéral fixé à 10 $ l'heure. L'année passée, le NPD a 
lancé sa campagne nationale visant à mettre fin à la pauvreté au Canada, ce 
qui a déjà visité 12 communautés.

« Notre objectif est d'établir un plan national et détaillé pour réduire la 
pauvreté dans ce pays prospère », a dit le député Martin. « Ces audiences 
constituent une étape importante qui nous rapproche de cet objectif. »
