Pathfinder International is pleased to announce the publication of The
Effect of Community-Based Reproductive Health Communication
Interventions on Contraceptive Use Among Married Couples in Bihar,
India, in the December 2008 issue of International Family Planning
Perspectives. Pathfinder International authors Elkan E. Daniel, Rekha
Masilamani, and Mizanur Rahman report on the changes in family planning
attitudes, knowledge, and behavior among young women in three districts
of Bihar, India since the implementation of Pathfinder/India's PRACHAR
project. Notable results include an increase in contraceptive use among
young married women in intervention areas from 4% to 21% and a 40%
increase in demand for contraception. The authors conclude that
culturally appropriate, community-based programs that promote family
planning services that target youth and those who influence their
decisions can create demand for contraception among young couples and
lead to increased contraceptive use.
