Strengthening Service Delivery and Counseling for Injectable Contraceptives

In this two-week online discussion, health professionals around the world will share their experiences with injectable contraceptives in diverse service delivery settings.

 

Use of injectables is increasing in many areas, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. As demand for injectables rises, family planning programs are challenged to expand services while maintaining good quality.  This forum will be an opportunity to review the latest guidance on injectable contraceptives featured in Family Planning: A Global Handbook for Providers and exchange information and experiences with colleagues who are working to provide good-quality injectables services.

 

The first week of the forum will focus on service delivery and the second week will focus on counseling issues. The discussion will be guided by the interest of the participants, and may include diverse topics such as counseling about bleeding changes, ensuring safe injections, offering injectables in community-based distribution programs, counseling women who return late for injections, and introducing subcutaneous DMPA. A variety of tools and resources will be available for easy access in the online Resource Library. 

 

The discussion will be moderated by Robert Lande and Catherine Richey, Senior Technical Writers at the INFO Project and authors of the recent Population Reports issue, "Expanding Services for Injectables." 

 

The Global Handbook was prepared through a unique collaboration between Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Health Organization (WHO), and over 30 organizations around the world.
