An interesting follow-up to the discussion about community inclusion --
this could be one way to get some community-based projects started.

The deadline is fairly short, but still do-able.

Subject: [PAR-L] Community research program invites proposals - July 20

** Please distrubute widley**

Do you have projects sitting on the 'back burner', waiting for funding?

Do you have plenty of ideas, but no time to do the research...?

Connect with an SFU student

Through the Action Research eXchange (ARX)!

Greetings,

My name is Jessica Numminen, and I am the Community Outreach Liaison for
the Action Research Exchange (ARX), a program of the Simon Fraser Public
Interest Research Group at SFU. This program connects SFU students doing
research in classes or directed studies with organizations that need
research but have limited resources. Last year was our third and most
successful year of operation: we connected 51 organizations with SFU
students for the purpose of collaborative social justice research.

Our mandate is to support non-profit organisations and grassroots
community groups. You send us your project proposals, we match SFU
students to them - at no cost to you. All you need is a project idea! We
can also provide support in developing an idea and in getting you to the
point of submitting our easy online application at:
www.sfpirg.ca/arx/apply.

The deadline for community organizations and groups to submit
application proposals for the upcoming academic year (starting Sept
2007) is quickly
approaching: Friday, July 20th, 2007. Feel free to contact us at
604-291-4360 or [log in to unmask]

Projects submitted will be available to current SFU students through the
ARX website (www.sfpirg/arx). Students engaged in projects could be
from:

*	Certificate in Sustainable Community Development students
*	Students in Political Science, Communications, Sociology,
Women's
Studies
*	Communications students with graphic design and web management
skills
*	Any SFU undergraduate or graduate student across all disciplines

For example, in spring 2007, a research partnership was created between
two SFU Sociology students and the Komeza Empowerment Society. This
project was an in-depth analysis to determine what the needs and gaps in
support services are for female African refugees in Greater Vancouver
region. Based on the findings recommendations were made to effectively
accommodate the needs of these women.

Please check out our website at www.sfpirg.ca/arx or see below for
application details.

We look forward to working with you to meet your environment and social
justice research needs!

Education Coordinator, SFPIRG

How does ARX work?

We accept project proposals from groups working in the fields of
community development, social justice, international issues, the arts,
the environment, the media, and health. We publicize the projects to the
SFU campus community, then match them up with students who have the
applicable skills, interests, and education to bring to the work. The
student researcher receives course credit for their work, and the final
product remains under the ownership and control of the community group.

In other words, at the same time students benefit from research
experience that is community-based and practical, your organization
gains accessible research that can be used in the way you decide.

ARX's larger goal is to put community needs and social justice concerns
into academic work. We aim to connect with groups like yourself, who
might be interested in taking on special projects but may not have the
resources to do so.

***************************************************************
If you are interested in participating in ARX:

*Visit our website at www.sfpirg.ca/arx for an extensive description of
how the program works. Since your organization might not know what work
students are doing on campus, we've listed all the types of projects
possible under ARX, from formal reports and research papers, to video
documentaries and web design.

*Submit a community application form online at www.sfpirg.ca/arx/apply.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS JULY 20th (but the sooner the better!).
This is in order to have projects posted in time for the SFU fall 2007
semester.
Proposals received past the July 20th deadline will run the risk of not
being assessed and posted in time for student match-up this September.
If you have any difficulties submitting the online form, please use the
form as
a template and email us your proposal as a Word Document.

*	If your group or organization has a research question or a
research
project idea, feel free to contact us about it (604-291-4360).	The
application process is easy and we can give you added support if you
need.
Please check out our website for more information and for an online
application. The deadline for projects is July 20th, 2007.
