Millions of dollars continue to be wasted on educational programs, which
through public polls over the past years, have been shown to be
ineffective, and yet we continue along the same paths. The disparities
in cancer/cancer care are not only a reflection of poverty, access (lack
of) to care and gender issues but a very long laundry list. In addition,
there are disparities within site specific cancers which is not
something which the public appreciates nor understands, until it's too
late of course. Prevention has been the 'buzz words' for years now and
while it is said to reduce the burden in ~50% of cancers this is a much
too simplistic view.
It is very interesting as we get closer to the 'Survivors' Debate'
taking place in Novi, Michigan and Toronto that not one doctor or
healthcare provider has registered for either event. In fact, one
survivour circulated the information to their healthcare provider only
to receive an email back with a terse response stating accurate
information could be provided through Dr. xxxx . ON this later point,
extensive research shows time and time again that what is important to
patients/families is not necessarily the opinions of the 'experts'. We
fail to address or close the gaps, therefore, the survivor debates.
Fear of the unknown exists because one of the interim results of the
(unscientific) poll:

Q: Your relationship with your Oncologist is:

Excellent/Satisfactory: 77 %

These results of course bring up many questions and also observations
which will all be discussed at the events.

We continue to forge along with a 3rd event confirmed and a 4th in
discussion - all sponsored by the cancer patients themselves. The
funding issues are well known, but it is noteworthy that many of the
patient/survivour participants are PhD's/MD's/HCPS whose diagnosis has
permitted them to recognize that thinking outside of the box is
necessary. It is not the panacea to solve all of the issues, but it's
possibly a start - for us, anyway.
